The role of the vagus nerve (VN) in Parkinson's disease (PD)
The vagus nerve (VN) plays an important role in Parkinson’s disease (PD), and emerging research is elucidating its impact. Stay with us in the rest of this article
 Gut-Brain Connection :
  • Parkinson’s Disease may originate in the gastrointestinal tract and spread to the brain via the VN.
  • The Braak’s Hypothesis suggests that PD begins in the gut and uses the VN as a conduit to reach the brain.
  • People who have undergone vagotomy (severing of the VN) for stomach ulcers appear less likely to develop PD later in life³.
Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) :
  • VNS influences the production of dopamine (a key neurotransmitter affected in PD).
  •  It improves walking ability in PD patients.
  • VNS also enhances blood flow, reduces inflammation, and decreases abnormal protein buildup observed in PD².
 Polyvagal Nature :
  • The VN has two major branches: the more primitive (reptilian) and the more evolved (mammalian).
  •  The reptilian branch governs the “Freeze” stress response , which resembles the state in which people with PD often appear stuck.
  •  Understanding this polyvagal nature is crucial for comprehending PD¹.
Atrophy of the Vagus Nerve:
  •  Research has explored whether patients with idiopathic PD exhibit vagus nerve atrophy compared to controls.
  • The VN’s role in disease progression remains a significant area of study⁵.
In summary, the VN’s influence on PD extends beyond the gut-brain connection. VNS and understanding its polyvagal aspects offer new avenues for PD management.
